Terms of Service
The short version. Buying Shadowtype gives you a perpetual, personal license to use it on up to 5 of your Macs. There’s a genuinely useful free tier, a 14-day no-questions refund, and you keep full ownership of everything you write. Don’t resell license keys or try to defeat the licensing. The app is provided as-is.
1. Agreement
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) are a binding agreement between you and Shadowtype (“Shadowtype”, “we”, “us”) governing your download and use of the Shadowtype macOS application and related services. By installing, activating, or using Shadowtype, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the app.
2. License grant
Shadowtype is licensed, not sold. Subject to these Terms, a paid Pro purchase grants you a perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and use Shadowtype for your own personal or internal business use. “Pro” means a one-time purchase that grants a perpetual license with no recurring subscription; it refers to the supported life of the product, not a guarantee of perpetual updates.
3. Devices & activation
A Pro license may be activated on up to five (5) Macs that you own or control. Activation and an occasional background check contact our licensing server using your license and a one-way hashed device identifier (see the Privacy Policy, §4) to enforce this limit and honor refunds. You can free a seat at any time via Settings ▸ License ▸ Deactivate and activate another Mac — there is no limit on how often you move between machines. An activated Mac continues to work offline within a grace period between checks; you must be online to activate a new device.
4. Free tier & beta builds
Shadowtype offers a free tier that works without a license, subject to a daily cap on accepted completions and with certain features reserved for Pro. Pre-release “beta” builds may include a built-in expiry date, after which they revert to the free tier until updated. We may change the features included in the free and paid tiers over time.
5. Payment & taxes
Purchases are sold and processed by our Merchant of Record, Polar.sh, who handles billing, payment, invoicing, and applicable VAT/sales tax. Prices are shown in USD unless stated otherwise; taxes may be added at checkout based on your location. Promotional or “Founders” pricing is offered in limited quantities and may change or sell out. Codes redeemed through third-party marketplaces (e.g. AppSumo) are additionally subject to that marketplace’s terms.
6. Refunds & revocation
You may request a refund within 14 days of purchase, no questions asked, via the Merchant of Record. Because there is a fully functional free tier you can try before paying, this gives you ample opportunity to evaluate fit. When a purchase is fully refunded, charged back, or canceled, the associated license is revoked: it can no longer be activated, and existing installations revert to the free tier after the offline grace period lapses. Marketplace redemptions follow that marketplace’s refund policy.
7. Acceptable use
You agree not to: (a) resell, sublicense, rent, or share your license key; (b) reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to derive source code except to the extent this restriction is prohibited by law; (c) circumvent, disable, or tamper with the licensing, device-activation, or usage-cap mechanisms; (d) use Shadowtype to violate any law or any third party’s rights; or (e) remove or alter any proprietary notices.
8. Intellectual property
Shadowtype, including its software, design, logos, and content, is owned by us and our licensors and is protected by intellectual-property laws. Except for the license expressly granted above, no rights are transferred to you. Third-party and open-source components are used under their respective licenses.
9. Your content
You retain all rights to the text you write and edit with Shadowtype. The app processes your content locally on your device to generate suggestions; we claim no ownership of, and obtain no rights to, your content, and your content is never transmitted to us or used to train any model.
10. Disclaimer of warranties
Shadowtype is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that suggestions will be accurate or suitable for any purpose. You are responsible for reviewing any text it helps you write.
11. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Shadowtype and its suppliers will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits, or goodwill. Our total aggregate liability for any claim relating to the app or these Terms will not exceed the amount you paid for your license in the twelve (12) months before the claim. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so some of the above may not apply to you.
12. Termination
These Terms apply until terminated. Your license terminates automatically if you breach them (including the acceptable-use rules) or if your purchase is refunded or charged back. You may stop using the app at any time by uninstalling it. Sections that by their nature should survive (ownership, disclaimers, liability limits, and governing law) survive termination.
13. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of [your jurisdiction], without regard to conflict-of-laws rules, and the courts located there will have exclusive jurisdiction, except where mandatory consumer-protection law in your country of residence provides otherwise.
14. Changes
We may update these Terms as the product evolves. Material changes take effect when posted here with an updated “Last updated” date; your continued use after that constitutes acceptance.
